As part of the activities of Al-Maarif University College during International Entrepreneurship Week, the Civil Engineering Department at the college held a scientific symposium on the phenomenon of earthquakes and its effects on the countries of the Middle East, especially Iraq. The symposium was presented by Lect. Dr. Bashar Hamdi Ismail Al-Kubaisi.
A comprehensive overview of the geological characteristics that increase the risk of earthquakes on structures was presented, and the importance of calculating additional loads resulting from earthquakes when designing shallow and deep foundations in Iraq was highlighted. The most important engineering solutions and experiments used in countries exposed to earthquakes, such as Japan, were reviewed.
In conclusion, general recommendations for improving the Iraqi seismic code were highlighted.
